Nut Dangers to Dogs

Atascocita

If your dog is extremely treat-motivated, then chances are they’re looking up to you whenever you reach for a snack. There are certain human snacks that are good - even healthy - for dogs, but when it comes to nuts, things can get a bit confusing.

Dogs can develop allergies to certain nuts and may experience symptoms, such as itchy and swollen skin that can be very uncomfortable. Below is a list of nut allergy symptoms to look out for in your pup:

  • Bald patches
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Coughing
  • Diarrhea
  • Hives
  • Obsessive licking
  • Skin rashes
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing

Some of the nuts that are OK for dogs are:

  • Peanuts: Peanuts are safe for dogs to eat, but avoid giving them the salted ones. Too much sodium for your dog can cause them problems and will be difficult to digest. Peanuts and peanut butter also contain high levels of fat, so moderation is key!

  • Cashews: Cashews are safe for your dog to eat, but similar to peanuts, are high in fat content. Avoid giving your dog the salted ones and opt for the unsalted cashews, Again, moderation is key, but cashews can be a delicious treat for your doggy!

Avoid giving your dog the following nuts:

  • Pistachios: While pistachios aren’t necessarily toxic to dogs, they can lead to serious digestive issues. If the pistachios have been out in the open for a while, they can develop a mold that is dangerous for your dog. Additionally, the pistachio shells are dangerous choking hazards.

  • Pecans: Avoid giving your pup pecans. While pecan pie may be a delicious treat for humans, these nuts have aflatoxin which can cause liver damage to dogs and is best if it’s avoided.
