In 1933, the AAHA was founded to serve as an organization to provide accreditation for veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada. The accreditation process is strictly voluntary, and it is something that only about 12% of animal hospitals complete. In order to become accredited, facilities must prove their commitment to patient care and customer service. They do this by being evaluated on over 900 standards encompassing all aspects of veterinary care.

The work doesn’t stop once a facility becomes accredited. In order to maintain AAHA accreditation, animal hospitals must pass comprehensive evaluations every three years.
